The UEFA Cup's fist ever tournament season was 1971/1972, with Tottenham Hotspur from England being the first Cup Winner. The UEFA Cup replaced the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, which was a tournament between Clubs from cities which participated in trade fairs at the time.

The tournament changed it's name to UEFA Cup after it was no longer a tournament associated with the trade fairs, but was run by UEFA.

The first round of the 2006-2007 UEFA Cup starts in the middle of July, with some teams participating for the first time in their history.
